Why ribbons aren't enough

What started out as a symbol memorializing our dead brothers, sisters, friends, parents and children has turned into a "red hangman's noose," crippling and tightening the clenched fist surrounding government inaction and meaningful medical research.

The ribbon has become a cliché. It has become a fashion statement for those wanting to be perceived as politically correct and morally self-righteous.

The fact is, red ribbons don't cure AIDS! But they have perpetuated complacency by allowing individuals who wear them to feel they have done their part by sympathizing with the sufferers

of this dreaded dis-

ease.

We don't need sympathy-we need outrage!

Instead of red ribbons, we need people to demand government leadership where 13 years of paying lip

ACT UP's detailed plan for an all out research effort to find a cure, now proposed legislation before Congress as House Bill HR 3310.

Put down your ribbons of silence and raise the voices of outrage!

ACT UP responds to HHS announcement

The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services announced a plan to create a task force on AIDS research development. They are calling on pharmaceutical manufacturers, academia, and medicine...oh yes, and the AIDS-affected community.

ACT UP

service has produced nothing but a few drugs of questionable benefit with diminishing effectiveness over the length of treat-

ment.

Instead of red ribbons, demand a national needle exchange program for IV drug

users.

Instead of red ribbons, provide a comprehensive and honest sex education program for our youth where sex is discussed in detail and condoms are readily available.

Instead of red ribbons, express outrage over the appointment of an AIDS coordinator, a bureaucratic position with a pitiful staff of five and offices above a McDonald's restaurant.

Instead of red ribbons, demand an AIDS czar with cabinet-level status and broad authority to demand cooperation between private and publicly financed research programs.

Instead of red ribbons, demand the Barbara McClintock Project To Cure AIDS,

These are the same people that have been in bed together since 1903. These are the same people that have dragged their feet for 12 years. These are the same people who left hundreds of thousands needlessly die because of their homophobia. These

are the same monsters and murderers we have been fighting for a decade. And now they want to confuse and defuse us with another task force on AIDS.

Enough task forces, enough discussion, it is time for action.

ACT UP takes this position on the tremendous announcement by our health heroes in Washington. Restructure the NIH any way you like, name any task force that makes you happy. We demand The Barbara McClintock Project To Cure AIDS. This program is outside of the NIH, and its murderous cohorts. This program calls for the government to exercise eminent domain. We will not bargain with the pharmaceutical manufacturers of America. We will not capitulate in our fight against this goodold-boy system that they want to expand into a task force.

We demand action! We demand a cure! We demand McClintock! We will not settle for anything less!
